use a web proxy
Neither my cable modem nor my Linksys router enabled me to monitor or filter access to web sites. I used a 15 year old laptop to install Debian Linux, Squid web proxy and squidGuard blacklist redirector. Now I can know what sites my children visit and I prevent them from accessing sites I don't want them to see.
