This applies to all of the companies - it is not unique to Verizon. Sprint for example does not allow tethering, but will sell you another phone line to accomplish what is already built in. It all boils down to greed.

Why can't I buy a receiver instead of rent one? Why is there not ala carte' pricing? Why do we pay extra for HD programming? None of it makes any sense.
